The can is one of the most popular beverage packs in the world. Made from steel or aluminium, it perfectly preserves content and it doesn’t let light, odours or liquids, in or out. The can isn’t just a good pack, it’s a great pack! We say this with absolute certainty, but if you need further convincing of the can’s advantages, read on…
The can has many benefits, and one its greatest advantages is its sustainability; the can is the most recycled drinks pack in the world.
Every can that is collected will be recycled, and can be recycled infinitely, with no loss of quality. That’s why we can say it’s made from permanently available material. This isn’t a phrase to take lightly; a can, whether made if aluminium or steel, need never end up in waste, it can go round and round the product cycle indefinitely. In fact, approximately 75% of all the aluminium ever produced is still in productive use.
Of course, when you recycle a can, you save energy and reduce the environmental footprint of the resulting product. Every recycled aluminium can saves 95% of the energy needed to make it from raw materials, for steel this number is 80%, but perhaps it’s easier to grasp these figures in physical terms? In that case, recycling one aluminium drink can saves enough energy to boil a kettle three times or run a TV for three hours. Recycling seven steel cans saves enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 26 hours.
Once a beverage can has been recycled you could expect to see it on the shop shelf as another can within 60 days. If it isn’t turned into a new can, then it might re-emerge as part of a car engine, a bicycle or even an aeroplane.
Another advantage of cans is their portability. Despite their strength, beverage cans are incredibly light (aluminium weighing around 14g and steel, 20g); the wall of a can is thinner than a human hair. Another cool fact is that aluminium, contrary to expectations, doesn’t even become brittle at low temperatures. In reality, its strength increases!
Not only does its weight make the can the perfect pack for consumers to carry on their person, it also makes it ideal for mass-transportation. Cans are space efficient meaning more can be shipped during any one journey; the packaging represents about 7% of the volume in a full transport. Because of their light weight, the vehicles transporting cans to the retailer require less fuel
Retailers are keen on cans too. They know that they look great, keep drinks fresher for longer and utilise space efficiently, taking up less room on the shelf….and consumers love them….
So now, taking all of the above into consideration, imagine this scenario. The sun is shining, you’ve packed your picnic blanket and sandwiches ready for an afternoon in the park – or at a festival. What’s your choice of beverage pack for such an occasion?
