Cacto Drinks: High-quality cactus water in cans

Cactus water is one of the latest functional beverages to make its mark in the health drinks segment, it is renowned for its high vitamin content as well as antioxidants making it an effective hydration option. Containing electrolytes like potassium, magnesium and calcium that help to regulate fluid balance, it has achieved popularity with athletes as well as the wider consumer market. In fact, it has proved so popular that the cactus water market is expected to grow to $73.7 million by 2027. 

Cacto Drinks founder, Sam Jukes, examines the journey his brand has been on to date and why he decided to launch in cans. 

Cacto Drinks 

In 2019 I discovered the prickly pear cactus and immediately became fascinated by its unique natural composition and refreshing taste. I learnt that it has many benefits for our bodies and as a former athlete, I believed it would make the perfect ingredient for hydration, performance and recovery.  I made it my life’s mission to redefine hydration through the prickly pear cactus.  

The health benefits are not the only (pros) of this fruit. It can grow with minimal water irrigation, as it takes moisture from the atmosphere instead, and can improve soil quality by absorbing carbon. It’s as good for the planet as it is for our bodies. And most importantly, it is the most delicious and reinvigorating fruit I have ever experienced. So, I launched Cacto Drinks.  

But making this vision a reality required more than just an incredible product, it required the best packaging too.  

Why cans?  

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, we believe that the packaging should be as sustainable as the product inside. Our research had shown that customers view cans as a sustainable option due to their recyclability, and that they prefer them when enjoying soft drinks, so cans seemed like the obvious choice for us. 

We wanted our packaging to really stand out on the shelves and reflect the uniqueness of the product. The vibrant colour and texture of the prickly pear cactus inspired us to create a bold, eye-catching design. So we needed a packaging that would allow us to fully express this vision. Cans offered a large, smooth surface which gave us the space and abilities to bring our design to life. We recently conducted a survey which showed that 96% of our customers said they love our packaging. This is proof that good design can make a lasting impression, and cans have given us the freedom to do that. 

We’ve worked hard to ensure that our recipes are clean, natural and as free from additives as possible. Using cans helps us preserve the delicate flavours and natural sweetness of the prickly pear juice, as they provide protection against light and air. This is especially important as more and more consumers are seeking out healthier alternatives.  

A growing trend in health and wellness drinks 

In recent years, the health and wellness drinks category has experienced significant growth, driven by a growing awareness among consumers about the effects of their choices on both personal health and the environment. As a result, people are increasingly seeking out healthier alternatives, opting for beverages that support their well-being without compromising on taste or sustainability. Brands offering nootropic, vitamin-based, gut-friendly, or kombucha drinks have become regular fixtures on store shelves, reflecting the evolving preferences of today’s health-conscious shoppers.

While we aim to lead the charge in this growing movement, our ultimate goal is for cactus water to become as common as a can of soda or a glass of orange juice.
